In many households, people open the door as soon as the bell rings, almost automatically. That’s fine most of the time—until it isn’t. Delivery scams, aggressive salespeople, or simply uncomfortable interactions can be avoided if you first see who’s there.
A simple rule—“We always check the peephole or camera and speak through the door before opening”—creates a small safety buffer. You have a moment to decide: Do we know this person? Do they have a reason to be here? If you feel unsure, you can refuse politely without exposing your whole home.
Teaching this habit to kids and older family members is especially important. When everyone follows the same rule, there’s less chance of someone opening up impulsively to a stranger.
