In a small room, every solid piece of furniture grabs visual space. A heavy wooden coffee table or thick-legged chairs may be functional, but they create visual blocks that make the room feel packed.
Transparent pieces – glass or clear acrylic side tables, a see-through coffee table, even light, open-legged chairs – behave differently. Because you can see through them, your eye continues to travel across the room. They do their job (hold your cup, books, lamp) without shouting, “I’m here, taking up space!”
This doesn’t mean everything should be transparent; that would feel weird. But swapping one or two bulky items for see-through ones can lighten the overall feel. It’s especially effective in the centre of a small living room, where a clear table keeps the floor visible and the space feeling open.
You still have function, just less visual weight.
