Our eyes are drawn to horizontal surfaces. When a coffee table or dresser is covered in piles—remotes, cups, chargers, mail, coins—the whole room feels messy, even if the floor is fine.
If you choose just one prominent surface and completely clear and clean it, it acts like a calm island in the room. Suddenly there’s a place for your eyes to rest. The space looks more intentional, less chaotic.
Often, in the process of clearing that one spot, you’ll naturally put away several items that were contributing to overall clutter. It creates a knock-on effect.
It’s a good trick on low-energy days: instead of “I have to clean the whole room,” make a deal with yourself to reset just one key surface. The visual payoff is surprisingly big.
